How could Congress vote for the PATRIOT Act without ever getting a real opportunity to read it? Congress basically voted in favor of the Patriot Act for fear of being declared unpatriotic if voted against! Apparently the Bush Administration and FOX news think that patriotism is doing what is best for your government and not your country. Meanwhile, showing any dissent towards the government should be frowned upon in their view. However most Americans know that patriotism is instead doing what is best for your country and that dissent is a necessary form of checks and balances.

Unfortunately, Congress and the media have failed American citizens by allowing this act to pass. They have yet to question whether or not it violates our constitutional rights and have failed to inform the public. The PATRIOT Act violates our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, human rights and right to privacy.

The PATRIOT Act, which is an acronym for Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism, permits the following:

*Secret FBI and Police searches of your home and office.

*Secret government wiretaps on your phone, computer and/ or Internet activity.

*Secret investigations of your bank records, credit cards and other financial records.

*Secret investigations of your library and book activities.

*Secret examinations of your medical records.

*The freezing of funds and assests without prior notice or appeal.

Why should we allow the president to imprison American citizens without due process, eavesdrop on our private conversations, engage torture as a state-sanctioned weapon and even violate the law? This administration would like us to think that terrorists are so evil and so dangerous that we cannot have any limits on the power of the president if we want him to protect us from the dangers in the world.

The truth is terrorism will always exist and there is no way to defeat it by declaring war on it. It is ludicrous to think that you can defeat an ideology. This so called War on Terror has done nothing but create more enemies and hate for this country. Maybe we should take a look at changing our foreign policy and attempt to find out the real reasoning behind 9/11. Taking away our civil liberties isn't going to make us any safer.

If anyone is interested in reading a good book I strongly suggest the One Percent Doctrine. The book is titled after the Cheney doctrine in which he announced that if there was "a one percent chance" that a threat was real "we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response." He added, "It's not about our analysis, or finding a preponderance of evidence.
